If you’ve looked into getting a massage, whether it was a one-time occurrence or a regular part of your health and wellness routine, you probably were given a variety of choices. Some of the most common massage techniques include Swedish or “classic” massage in addition to Chinese, Japanese, and Thai massage. The oldest recorded forms of massage stemmed from Asia, or more specifically, India, about 3,000 BCE. Massage was passed down orally throughout generations and was believed to be of godly origin. Eventually, these beliefs began to spread and then take on new forms throughout China, Japan, and even Egypt. European massage developed much later, around 800 BCE, with the first records of massage coming from Greece, where ancient athletes would use massage as one technique to keep their bodies in prime physical condition before competing in rigorous sporting tournaments. Soon herbs and oils were incorporated into the routine, possibly contributing to the widespread use essential oils today, as people also noticed their skin conditions improved after using these oils. Soon, friction and rubbing were incorporated as well, and the massage traditions spread to Rome, Sweden, and eventually even the United States. Based off of their body stroke styles, these two forms of massage have distinctive missions. Asian or Eastern massage tends to focus on so-called energy meridians, lines that trace through the body. Stimulating and soothing points along these energy lines will help good energy to spread to other sites. However, Western massage focuses largely on realignment and relaxation, restoring balance to other systems of the body – such as the nerves and the digestive system – by first focusing on the musculo-skeletal system. Each of these forms of massage have unique associated exercises or wellness techniques. Eastern massage is often practiced in tandem with meditative techniques such as yoga, Tai Chi, and Qi Gong, while Western massage combines stretching and breathing with more rigorous workouts in pilates. While both types of massage allow you to feel relaxed and revitalized, they take different routes in approaching this goal. Eastern massage involves focusing energy flows and achieving a balance of energy in the human body and the human mind, while Western massage just focuses on different areas of the body. The manifestations of these principles are evident in the different approaches Eastern and Western massage techniques take when it comes to diagnosing or identifying problem areas. A Western-style massage therapist would examine the tension and pain in the body and identify their causes before deciding how best to proceed. An Eastern-style massage therapist would take the pulse of the wrist at three different positions and also examine the tongue, looking for physical symptoms of energy imbalance. It’s hard to count just how many different branches of massage therapies exist. Each tradition comes with its own type of meditative disciplines, physical strokes, use of accessories such as oils or hot stones, and more details. Often, different branches of massage therapy that originated in Asia get grouped together and generalized as “Oriental,” “Eastern,” or even just “Asian” massage. Many people do not realize that generalizing all Asian massages into one large category can be harmful, and they do it only for the sake of simplicity. Yet, even though the intention may not be harmful, it’s important to recognize the intricate difference between these techniques that were so painstakingly developed over decades by a variety of different cultures. It’s true that massage has its roots in Asia, with the earliest recorded types of massage coming from about 3000 BCE in India. However, massage spread throughout the continent over the centuries, and in each country a variety of different traditions developed. Over time, nearly all of the different Asian traditional massage techniques came on their own to focus on a similar theme: energy and balance. Many Asian massage therapies focus on releasing invisible blockages in the body and soothing energy lines throughout the body, with the intent of establishing a balance of the body and mind with the external environment. It’s easy to generalize, but let’s break down the different kinds of specific traditions that come from different countries and regions from Asia. ChinaTuina is a traditional type of Chinese massage and one of the most common Eastern massage therapies that are also practiced in America. After feeling a patient’s pulse to determine the status of their internal energy, a Tuina therapist finds energy blockages along the energy meridians of the body and tries to release them to establish balance and harmony within the body. Tuina is known for its firm grasping, pushing strokes to stimulate energy flow. This acupressure is applied to different parts of the body. Tuina is quite often practices in Chinese hospitals, health clinics, rehabilitation facilities, and other establishments. Tuina is regarded as a highly-respected tradition, much more valuable than a way to simply relax. In fact, in the more traditional areas of China, Tuina therapists are as admired as the highly-trained and very respected American doctors.
JapanShiatsu is a type of massage commonly practiced and revered in Japan, although it did technically first develop in China before spreading to Japan as other techniques became more common in China. Shiatsu practitioners believe that that regular application of this technique will increase physical strength and resistance to disease in addition to balance and harmony of the mind. It is rumored that after intense Shiatsu sessions, a client will experience symptoms similar to a common cold, such as fatigue, sneezing, and headaches. Many people believe that these symptoms are a sign that the energy healing has begun. Shiatsu strokes focus mainly on pressure applied with the fingertips, although many Shiatsu therapists also use their palms, elbows, and knees to apply pressure deeper into the energy lines that run throughout the body. Restoring blockages of life energy and allowing energy to flow through the body is believed to bring about total and comprehensive healing. IndiaChampissage is a term that was coined in the late twentieth century from the Hindi and Urdu term for head, champi. This technique was adopted from a different Indian massage technique, Ayurverda. Ayurverda is a traditional Indian massage technique that focuses on applying pressure to the upper body, believing that the mind, body, and spirit are all parts of one unified truth, so anything that benefits one of those areas will bring positivity to the other. Champissage was brought to the United States as a modified, modernized version of Ayurverda that focuses only on the head, face, and neck. Sometimes called simply “Indian head massage,” Champissage applies deep pressure to the muscles and pressure points in the neck and shoulders before moving to the head and scalp to improve blood circulation to the brain. The client is traditionally seated during the massage, and it is believed that Champissage not only increases energy flow to the brain but improves concentration, hair growth, and the client’s openness to spiritual revelation. ThailandCalled Nuat Phaen Boran or, more formally, Nuat Thai, this style of massage combines principles inspired by the Ayurverda of India and yoga poses. The client traditionally wears loose, comfortable clothing and lies, kneels, or stands on a mat on the floor. The body is not rubbed as one might think, but instead it is pulled, pressed, stretched, rocked, and guided into various yoga poses. The massage follows energy lines, called “sen,” throughout the body, to smooth, stimulate, and encourage healthy energy flow. In traditional places in Thailand, practitioners of this technique must complete at minimum 800 hours of vigorous training, and there are nearly 1,000 traditional clinics registered in Thailand that offer this traditional healing practice. Massage requires trust, connection, and the proper application of technique. The techniques used, however, vary. Each technique has its own name and specific way to be performed. When studying to become a masseuse, massage specialists are required to learn these techniques and become familiar with their terminology. Effleurage The effleurage technique comes from Swedish massage and is categorized by being a smooth and gliding stroke of the hand. Effleurages are hand-over-hand motions that can be used over the entire body and are particularly good for the back, legs, arms, chest, face, and throat. Most massages start and end with light effleurage motions, as they serve as a warm up and help the client relax. Kneading Kneading is another popular technique. If you’ve watched anyone get a massage on TV, you’ve probably seen the massage specialist kneading the client. Kneading is when the therapist squeezes muscle tissue between his or her hands and fingertips, and then lets it go. Kneading is done rhythmically, using one hand first and then the other and is great for areas such as the calves, thighs, shoulders, buttocks, and upper arms. Friction The friction technique is when a therapist massages a specific part of the body– usually where a knot has formed- with his or her fingers. Friction has a kneading motion- however, it is more targeted and can be applied directly to a specific location. The action in question is usually circular in motion. It can also be performed across the muscle which is called cross-fiber friction. This is the technique that makes massages hurt but feel good at the same time. Stretching The stretching technique is exactly what it sounds like. The masseuse takes the client’s arms or legs and stretches and flexes them, taking care to carefully bend the muscles. This technique is commonly used in Asian style massages, and is sometimes used in Swedish deep tissue massages. Percussion techniques are strong and striking movements. A classic example of this is the commonly seen on TV “chopping” motion that is done with the side of one’s hands. The goal of this technique is to stimulate the body. The rolling technique means that the massage specialist lifts his or her client’s skin between the fingers and gently rolls over the lifted area. This technique is used to release restrictions between the skin and tissue beneath it. Rolling can be used to help relieve knots and tension in combination with friction techniques. Cupping is used in Asian massages, but can be used in Swedish massages as well. Cupping is performed when the masseuse creates a cup with his or her palm and fingers and uses the cup to chop at an area of the body that is tense or stressed. Cupping is commonly done on the chest to relieve mucus build up from various sicknesses, and can be done lightly or with force. Plucking is similar to pinching, but shouldn’t be painful or leave any red marks. Plucking is done successfully when the specialist uses outstretched fingers to grip and lift small areas of skin. For plucking, both hands are used and take turns completing the motion in rapid succession. While it isn’t essential to know the name of massage techniques, it can prove to be helpful in case you want to request that a certain technique be used on you. Even if this isn’t the case, knowing about what your masseuse is doing to your body and why can create peace of mind and provide the basis for good, educated, conversation. For as long as we can remember and have been recording, the Japanese have always found creative ways to impress us. Somehow, Japanese culture can always find a way to turn the most remarkable things into something even better- this is no different with massages. More specifically, the nuru massage.
